About the club

APS United is a combine club, with members drawn from the Old Scotch, Old Xaverians, St Kevin's, Haileybury and Old Melburnians clubs. The club fields both men's and women's teams in the Athletics Victoria winter road and cross country events, known as XCR. The AV competition offers opportunities to athletes of all ages and abilities to compete in graded scratch and relay races.

APSU's leading men's team competes in Division 1, the highest level of competition available to athletes in Victoria. The club also fields various men's and women's teams in lower and overage divisions, so that members of all our teams compete for premiership success.

During recent seasons, APSU's most successful team has been the men over 40, who won the M40 premiership in 2007, 2008 and 2009. The women's team has been growing in strength and numbers and currently boasts several of the state's top athletes, including State medallists Abi Bayley, Isabella De Castella and Robyn Millard.

History

APSU was born in 1980 as a combined A grade track and field team. The first member clubs were Old Scotch, Old Xaverians, St Kevin's and Old Carey. The club had great success in A grade of the summer competition, which was later named State League. APSU won two State League premierships in 1993-94 and 1996-97.

Between 1980 and 1995, the constituent clubs of the summer combine continued to participate separately in the AV winter competition with only limited success. In 1996, a combined APS team entered the AV winter competition for the first time. This new team was known 'Athletics APS' in order to distinguish it from the summer combine.

In the early years of this new team only Old Scotch, Old Haileybury as it was then known, and Old Melburnians competed under the Athletics APS banner. Old Xaverians, which was a founding member, departed after the first year but rejoined in 2001, which was also the year in which Athletics APS was renamed APS United. St Kevin's, which had departed after a couple of years of membership in the late 1990's, returned to the fold in 2006.

During its history, many outstanding athletes have competed for APSU. You can find a complete list of medallists here. They include gold medallists Greg Lyons, Johnny Halliday, Nigel Adkin, Matt Gibney and Abi Bayley.
